When to visit the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is warm year-round, so timing is less about temperature and more about rain, hurricane risk, crowds and price. The short version: December through April is the driest, busiest and most expensive stretch; June through November is hurricane season, with the highest risk from August to October — and the best deals.
High season: December to April
The dry season brings reliably sunny days, lower humidity and calm seas on the main tourist coasts. It coincides with winter demand from North America and Europe, so resorts run at their fullest and rates peak around Christmas, New Year and Easter — book those weeks months ahead.
This window also includes the country's signature natural event: humpback whales gather in Samaná Bay from mid-January through March, one of the Caribbean's great wildlife spectacles.
Hurricane season: June to November
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June through November, peaking August to October. Direct hits are infrequent, but that stretch carries the highest odds of tropical storms and heavy rain, and it's when travel insurance with weather coverage earns its keep.
Outside the peak, June and early July are often excellent value: hot, mostly sunny, with brief afternoon showers. Rain in the tropics tends to arrive in short bursts rather than washed-out days.
Shoulder months and regional differences
May and November are the sweet spots for value: shoulder-season rates with weather that's usually close to high-season quality. Note that the north coast (Puerto Plata, Cabarete) sees more rain from November to January, while the east and southeast stay drier.
Seaweed (sargassum) can affect east-facing beaches unpredictably, most often between spring and late summer; resorts clean their beaches daily but sheltered coasts like Bayahibe are less exposed.
Frequently asked questions
What's the best month overall?
February and March combine dry weather, whale season in Samaná and slightly lower prices than the Christmas peak — the best all-around window.
Is it safe to book during hurricane season?
Millions travel then without issue, and prices are markedly lower. Book flexible rates or insurance with weather coverage, and favor June, July or November over the August-October peak if you want lower risk.
When can I see whales in Samaná?
Humpback whales are in Samaná Bay from mid-January through late March; boat tours run daily from Samaná town during the season.
When are hotel rates lowest?
Late August through October, coinciding with the hurricane-season peak. May and early November offer nearly the same discounts with better odds of dry weather.
